You may imagine that the result of your presidential election is of no interest to a sparsely populated outpost loitering at the edge of the map. Why should Australia, with its menagerie of threatening creatures and vindictive natural forces, care who resides in the White House?
From within the thick of the political skirmish, it can be difficult to see beyond the red and blue thrall of banners, flags, placards, smoke, and flame. The ideological frenzy inside the United States is so fierce that its reverberations have spilled into other nations, triggering youth uprisings that have nothing to do with the politics of those countries. While trying to quiet these outbreaks, those on the outside glimpsed the precipice upon which this historic election is staged. It looms over its geopolitical neighbours as a shadow – a storm that threatens the edges of civilisation with ominous thunder.
This is not the first time Australia has watched, powerless, the movement of political forces. It is the season for questioning ghosts. A period of reflection, revisionism, ignorance, and naivety. The last of us who saw the great conflicts of the previous century have flickered out. Their grandchildren are left alone with an unwritten historical volume. Of course this anxiety expresses itself as civil tension. The only decision that remains is whether or not we want a future shaped by fear – a withering regress – or a new age of peaceful Western dominance in which great things will be built.
Dear America… The prize of your presidential race is not the internal social issues which have divided Democrat and Republican for generations, nor is the fallout localised to the federation of her states. This election, like those before it which were conducted on the fringes of global conflict, will sculpt the immediate future of geopolitics for better or worse, for richer or for poorer.
A weakened America that sulks away from global affairs will create a power vacuum fought over by a collection of authoritarian regimes. If you leave the game you abandon your friends to the dinner table of predators who have already poured out the champagne. The path opens to the expansionist military forces of China, Russia, and the Arab League to install themselves as the legislators of global law. The whim of international warlords. Already, we have allowed the United Nations to be subverted by barbarous leaders and quietly usurped by competing paper alliances, whose members have made pacts against the interest of peace.
America, you are the moral guardians of the world. The force which safeguards the liberty of free nations. Nations who, having chosen democratic peace, are not in a position militarily to defend themselves from greedy paws reaching through the Pacific and Europe.
A Trump victory will push Communism back into the shadows. A Trump victory stills the progress of rapacious politicians. A Trump victory steps the world away from a generation of war. A Trump victory is the promise of local prosperity and global security.
