Thanks “J” Kelly. I responded to another, more graciously raised concern like this:

“I wove the unadulterated Gospel into my conversation with him without being overly hostile to him. He received it without debate and apparently was unsurprised by my orthodoxy. He acknowledged I disagree with his beliefs about marriage, so there was no possibility one could reasonably infer my approval of all of his behavioural choices. He claims to have progressed from atheist to believer, and associating with evangelical Christians is the best strategy to helping him continue to repentance. I regularly interview atheists (like Mark Latham, Alexandra Marshall) and others who contradict essential doctrine, and am happy to fight wokeness and wickedness beside them whenever our paths cross.

Perhaps it’s like the Allies associating with the Russians to defeat the Nazis. There’s a common enemy that poses an existential threat to all that is good, and to refuse assistance from mostly aligned co-belligerents seems self-harming.

I rebuked a pastor yesterday for throwing out all of Charlie Kirk’s ministry because he recently said he employs Mormons and wants their churches, as allies against wokeness and wickedness, to be strong in America again. I agree with Charlie that wherever we find agreement we can publicly associate, without requiring uniformity, or being mistaken as approving of their more serious errors. Grace and truth are not mutually exclusive.”

As Charlie Kirk said when criticised for employing homosexuals and Mormons, and associating with Rubin, Theil and others, “We don’t build conservatism by excluding people who fight to destroy leftism”. I’m pleased to associate with most people who are anti-Left.

My correspondant replied to me, “Very much appreciate your reply brother. Your approach throughout the interview was very gracious, yet forthright, indeed – anyone watching would not be left with any misconception as to where you were coming from. Yes, I’m aware, too, that you speak with a wide cross-section of people in public life. I do hope Dave’s newfound faith is built on a solid foundation and, as such, he’ll be convicted by God’s spirit to renounce his past and pursue a different way forward. What a tremendous witness for Jesus that would be! Keep fighting the good fight Dave.”

Every single unbeliever is wicked – so we should only promote born again Christians? That’s the logical conclusion of your rant. Please be serious! You are right that “We must stay rooted in the Word of God,” which there was no possible doubt I did in that interview. No one believed I was endorsing Rubin’s doctrinal positions, including him. While Jesus associated with the sexually and financially immoral, He didn’t affirm their behaviours and they didn’t infer He did. I feel comfortable with that standard.

God bless you as you grow in grace and Truth.
